Tool Overview: “When Is Your 1st Million”
This web tool is designed to help users estimate how long it will take to reach their first million dollars based on different investment parameters. It allows users to input values for their initial capital, monthly contributions, annual return rate, and investment period, as well as customize the allocation of their investments across five different categories: ETFs, Crypto, Term Deposits, Bonds, and DeFi.
The tool then calculates and displays the projected growth of the portfolio over time, considering monthly compounding returns and allocations. The results are presented with a detailed summary, including a breakdown of each investment category, and a stacked bar chart that visualizes the growth of the portfolio over the investment period.
Key Features:
- Adjustable Investment Parameters:
- Initial capital, monthly contribution, annual return, and investment period can be customized.
- Portfolio Allocation:
- Users can set the percentage allocation for five investment categories.
- Real-Time Growth Calculation:
- As inputs change, the tool recalculates the projected growth and updates the results and chart.
- Customizable Category Names:
- Users can rename the investment categories (ETFs, Crypto, Term Deposits, Bonds, DeFi).
- Portfolio Visualization:
- A stacked bar chart shows how the portfolio grows over time, with each category’s contribution to the total portfolio value.
- Responsive Design:
- The tool adapts to different screen sizes, making it user-friendly on both mobile and desktop devices.
User Guide:
1. Setting Initial Parameters
To get started, you will need to enter your initial investment details:
Initial Capital:
- Use the range slider to select your starting amount of money. The default value is $100,000.
Monthly Contribution:
- Set the monthly amount you plan to invest by adjusting the slider. The default is $2,000.
Annual Return (%):
- Adjust the slider to set your expected annual return. The default is 17%. This percentage will determine how much your portfolio grows each year.
Investment Period (Years):
- Use the slider to set the number of years you plan to invest. The default period is 10 years.
As you adjust these sliders, the tool will immediately update the displayed values to reflect your changes.
2. Customizing Portfolio Allocation
You can allocate your investment across five categories: ETFs, Crypto, Term Deposits, Bonds, and DeFi. These allocations can be adjusted as follows:
Change Category Names:
- You can modify the names of the categories (e.g., change “ETFs” to “Stocks” or “Crypto” to “Digital Assets”). Just type a new name in the provided input fields for each category.
Allocate Percentages:
Below the category names, you will find input fields where you can set the allocation percentage for each category. The total of all allocations must add up to 100%.
Use the number inputs to set the percentage allocation for each category. For example, you might allocate 40% to ETFs, 30% to Crypto, and so on.
Note: If the total allocation exceeds or falls short of 100%, the tool will display an alert asking you to correct it. The portfolio will only be calculated when the total allocation is exactly 100%.
As you change the allocations, the tool will immediately recalculate the portfolio breakdown and update the results.
3. Calculate Portfolio Growth
Once you’ve entered all the necessary information (initial capital, monthly contributions, return rate, investment period, and portfolio allocation), click the “Calculate Growth” button.
The tool will:
- Calculate how your investments will grow over the specified period using monthly compounding returns.
- Provide a Growth Summary that shows the final portfolio value after the specified years and how your initial capital and monthly contributions will accumulate.
4. Viewing Results
After calculating the growth, you will see the following:
Growth Summary:
- This includes a summary of your investment, such as the initial capital, monthly contributions, expected annual return, and total portfolio value after the specified number of years.
Portfolio Allocation Breakdown:

5. Interactive Features
Recalculate Growth:

Chart Interaction:
- Hover over the bars in the stacked bar chart to see the exact value of each category at a given year.
Tips for Using the Tool:
Ensure Total Allocation Equals 100%:
- When adjusting the allocation percentages for the categories, always ensure the total adds up to exactly 100%. If not, the tool won’t proceed with the calculation and will prompt you to correct it.
Use the Sliders for Quick Adjustments:
- Sliders make it easy to quickly adjust your values for initial capital, monthly contribution, annual return, and investment period.
Track Changes in Real Time:
- Every time you change a value, the tool recalculates and updates the growth projection and chart. This helps you see the immediate impact of different investment strategies.
Portfolio Allocation Strategy:
- Experiment with different allocations across the categories to see how it affects your overall growth. You can try more conservative allocations with more Term Deposits and Bonds, or more aggressive ones with higher Crypto and DeFi investments.
